ULTRASOUND SCAN

Ultrasound scan (also called a sonogram) is a prenatal test offered to most pregnant women. It uses sound waves to show a picture of your baby in the uterus (womb). Ultrasound helps your health care provider check on your baby’s health and development

An ultrasound scan is a medical test that uses high-frequency sound waves to capture live images from the inside of your body. It’s also known as sonography. The technology is similar to that used by sonar and radar, which help the military detect planes and ships

HOW MANY TIMES DO YOU GET AN ULTRASOUND DURING PREGNANCY?

Most healthy women receive two ultrasound scans during pregnancy. “The first is, ideally, in the first trimester to confirm the due date, and the second is at 18-22 weeks to confirm normal anatomy and the sex of the baby,”

WHAT ULTRASOUND IS USED FOR PREGNANCY?

Transvaginal ultrasound.

Transvaginal ultrasounds are used most often during early pregnancy. This type of ultrasound also might be done if a transabdominal ultrasound didn’t provide enough information.

WHEN SHOULD I GO FOR FIRST ULTRASOUND IN PREGNANCY?

While most practitioners wait until at least 6 weeks to perform the first ultrasound, a gestational sac can be seen as early as 4 1/2 weeks after your last period; a heartbeat can be detected as early as 5 to 6 weeks (though it might not be detected that early in all cases).

WHAT HAPPENS AT YOUR FIRST ULTRASOUND?

Your OB-GYN first listens for your baby’s heartbeat. From this test, your doctor will be able to determine a more accurate due date and track milestones during your pregnancy. She’ll also be able to tell if you’re pregnant with multiples, and she’ll determine if you have an ectopic pregnancy

WHAT OTHER THING CAN ULTRASOUND CAN DETECT?

Cardiovascular issues: Ultrasounds that detect blood vessels can also find narrowed vessels or blockages to blood flow. Tumors and cysts: An ultrasound can find dense areas of tissue such as tumors or cysts. It shows cysts differently from tumors to help your doctor make a diagnosis.

WHAT ARE 3 USES OF ULTRASOUND?

Ultrasound is a useful way of examining many of the body’s internal organs, including but not limited to the:

heart and blood vessels, including the abdominal aorta and its major branches.

  • liver.
  • gallbladder.
  • spleen.
  • pancreas.
  • kidneys.
  • bladder.
  • uterus, ovaries, and unborn child (fetus) in pregnant patients.
